The level of training, credentials and areas of expertise are meant to assist you in finding a therapist or a short list of therapists that might be appropriate for you and/or your client. Once you have selected a therapist, make sure to discuss any needs and concerns you might have to ensure that he or she has the necessary skills to assist in meeting your need(s). Ultimately, only you can determine if you feel comfortable with a particular therapist.
What are the different levels of SP Training?
Level I: Training for the Treatment of Trauma. Professionals who have graduated from Level I have had 100 hours of training in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy in helping clients suffering from Trauma. These graduates learn simple body-oriented interventions for tracking, naming and safely exploring trauma-related somatic activation, creating new competencies and restoring a somatic sense of self. Students learn effective, accessible interventions for identifying and working with disruptive somatic patterns, disturbed cognitive and emotional processing, and the fragmented sense of self experienced by so many traumatized individuals. Techniques are taught within a phase-oriented treatment approach, focusing first on stabilization and symptom reduction. Sensorimotor Psychotherapy can be easily and effectively integrated into psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and EMDR-focused treatments
Level II: Development, Attachment and Trauma. Professionals that have complete both Level I and Level II of the SPI Professional Training, have completed 300 hours of training in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy.
Level II graduates are trained to distinguish and treat developmental and traumatic issues. Developmental issues result from disturbed early attachments relationships that lead to limiting beliefs about oneself and the world. Post-traumatic stress disorder results from overwhelming experience that remains unintegrated. Early attachment disturbances can lead to a wide variety of adult relational problems, especially when combined with unresolved trauma. Level II of the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy training program illustrates how traumatic, attachment, and developmental issues influence one another, and how to provide effective treatment given their inevitable intertwining.
SP Certified Advanced Practitioners: Advanced Practitioners have completed all three levels of training in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, a total of over 440 hours. This program is designed to provide the training necessary for each student to become an expert in implementing the techniques and methodology of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy into clinical practice. Graduates of this final phase of training, having completed @180 hours of in depth video assessment of their clinical work and supervision from Institute trainers, are proficient in working with all five stages of the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy method. Their level of expertise is indicated by the title, "SP Certified Practitioner".
SPI Continuing Education Participant: Graduates who continue their SP education after graduation by participating in consultation with SP trainers to learn about new developments in SP, augment their SP skills, and integrate SP interventions in their clinical work. SPI recommends that our graduates participate in our continuing education program to integrate these skills into existing clinical practice.
